Crunchy, nutritious and packed with tasty goodies, granola is a popular breakfast that many of us enjoy. But what actually is it? And how come it's being seen on more and more breakfast tables?
Well, first off, the name Granola is derived from the words granular and grain with the suffix originating in the US.
That's because the cereal is a mixture of oats, nuts, seeds and dried fruit which is tossed with a small amount of oil before being sweetened with honey and finally baked to form moreish clusters of crunchy goodness. It's a tried and tested recipe that we've been perfecting for the last 40 years.
The History of Granola in the UK
We're really proud of the fact that Jordans Cereals founders, Bill and David, were the first to bring Granola to the UK. It was whilst Bill was touring as a drummer in the US in 1968 that he first discovered the oaty goodness. Bill knew a good thing when he saw it, so bought it back to his brother David in the UK.
After taking the reins at the family mill in 1970, the brothers started to produce tasty, wholesome breakfast cereals, the first of which being granola. In 1972, they launched Jordans 'Crunchy G' granola, the UK's very first granola which still exists today as Jordans Crunchy Oat Granola.
Granola vs Muesli
A year after Bill and David launched Granola, muesli was next on the list containing whole grain cereals, juicy fruit and a sprinkling of tasty nuts. With two great products launched within a year of each other, it wasn't long before the British public were filling their breakfast bowls with crunchy granola and delicious muesli – but did they know the difference?
Granola and muesli contain similar ingredients, but they're not the same thing.
Granola is baked to give it that perfect crunch; Muesli, on the other hand, mixes rolled oats with nuts seeds and dried fruit but is not baked - meaning the ingredients are effectively eaten raw with milk or yogurt.
While granola comes from the USA and dates back to the 1890s, muesli originates in Switzerland and was the brainchild of a physician from the 1900s.
