Back in September we talked about Pick Your Own fruit and veg farms, and now with Christmas fast approaching we are talking about Pick Your Own Farms of the Christmas tree variety. Did you know there are over 320 Christmas tree farms in the UK, selling everything from the easily recognisable Norway Spruce to the lesser-known Fraser Fir?
Caring for trees…
For 35 years the British Christmas Tree Growers’ Association has been working to make sure all live Christmas trees sold in the UK are grown in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way. Around 6-8 million trees are sold in the UK every year, and the BCTGA strives to guarantee that every single one meets the required standards. Their website is a great way to find Christmas tree farms near you, as you can search using your postcode here.
Buying a real Christmas tree can be a great way to spend a few hours with your family or friends, and it also helps to support British growers.
Around 80% of Christmas trees sold in the UK are Nordmann Firs, but there are actually 8 types to choose from so there’s bound to be one to suit your home. Christmas trees not only look better and smell better, but they are much better for the environment than buying a fake one. Real Christmas trees are farmed just like any other crop and so they provide space for wildlife to live and thrive in which helps the wider countryside!
So if you want to do things a little differently this year, head down to your local BCTGA accredited Christmas tree farm and have a browse.
We’d love to see how good your real Christmas tree looks this year so go ahead and share your pictures with us via Facebook or Twitter.
And, as always, don’t forget to check out our Free Goodies page where you can get your hands on some great prizes for entering our competitions. Good luck!
