Do you envy your early-bird friends? Don't worry, you too can be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed each morning - just take your finger off that snooze button and follow these top five tips.
1. Make bedtime sacred
It's obvious that the quality of your sleep makes all the difference to how you feel in the morning, and if you're a night owl you probably pack too many things into your evenings leaving no time to switch off before bed. Assume that you have an hour less each evening instead and keep that spare 60 minutes as pure wind down time. Read a book, listen to some music, or take a long hot bath - that way you can clear your head of the stresses and strains of the day, and the only thing on your mind when the light goes out will be a big fat Zzzzzz….
2. Open the curtains
Although actual sunshine is a bit thin on the ground right now, daylight is our body's natural signal to get up and go. So if you find yourself shuffling around zomblie-like in the semi-darkness each morning, whip open the curtains the moment you get up for a quick energy fix.
3. Get moving
Exercising first thing in the morning not only means that you've already ticked one of the boxes on your to do-list before you reach the office, but according to diet and fitness expert Laura Williamsit can also boost your energy levels and kickstarts your metabolism for the day.So whether it's a quick run, a few yoga moves, or a DVD workout in front of the telly, get up and get moving and you'll be raring to go.
4. Treat yourself
Don't forget to reward yourself for getting up early with a little bit of well-deserved you time. If you know that those extra moments in bed mean you won't have time to look at the paper, read a chapter of your book or even curl your hair like you'd promised yourself, you're less likely to groan and ignore the alarm.
5. Don't skip breakfast!
There's a reason breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and if yours generally consists of a cup of coffee and a stick of gum it's no wonder you're feeling sluggish. A substantial, healthy breakfast will leave you ready to face whatever the day throws at you. Opt for wholegrains like those found in our tasty Crunchy Oat Granola or the wholesome oats in our Chunky Traditional Porridge and don't forget to add a healthy handful of berries or some sliced apple or banana, to make sure you're getting a dose of your all-important five-a-day.
