This month Bike Week will take place from 13th-21st June, to encourage more people to discover the joy of cycling, whether for work or for pleasure. Here at Jordans we’re right behind it – we love the outdoors so we’re all for stepping out from behind the wheel and getting closer to nature. But, of course, cycling benefits our health too; according to CTC, the National Cycling Charity:
“People who cycle regularly in mid-adulthood typically enjoy a level of fitness equivalent to someone 10 years younger and their life expectancy is two years above the average.”
That’s a great incentive if you ask us! If you want to get involved in Bike Week, events will be taking place throughout the country (find your local activities here) and cover everything from competitive races to more leisurely excursions that suit any pace.
Whatever your cycling plans, don’t forget to set yourself up with a delicious balanced breakfast…it just so happens that we have the perfect recipes to give you some inspiration!
For the busy commuter
Get ready for a full-day of work and an exhilarating bike ride into the office with a simple yet delicious breakfast recipe. This Granola & Yoghurt Breakfast Combo combines thick Greek yoghurt with Jordans Super 3 Seed Granola (crunchy and nutritious) for an easy-to-make treat that won’t eat into your daily routine.
Top with a light drizzle of honey for added sweetness and sprinkle with fresh fruit (strawberries and blueberries work particularly well) to make it extra tasty.
For the early riser
If you normally join the birds in their dawn chorus and rise before anyone else in the house, then dip your spoon in Almond Porridge with Strawberries, Seeds & Nuts for breakfast.
Just what you need to take the edge off chilly early mornings, this warming dish is packed full of flavour. Add pumpkin seeds, almonds, strawberries, desiccated coconut and a little brown sugar to embrace your inner Goldilocks and get it just right.
For the weekend rider
If you prefer to pump those pedals at the weekend, you can spend a little longer cooking up a special breakfast before you head out. Jordans Pancake Brunch adds delicious Crunchy Oat Granola Fruit & Nut to the batter but the customisation doesn’t have to end there.
Use a mashed over-ripe banana instead of milk for an even tastier dish that’s not only delicious, but packed full of nutrients. Top with fresh fruit and a little maple syrup.
For a Sunday treat
After a solid week of cycling, you’ll have worked up a pretty big appetite. A Full English Breakfast is the perfect treat but it doesn’t have to raise the alarm bells.
Choose a seeded roll or brown bread on the side, swapping butter for low fat spread, and try vegetarian sausages that are grilled with the bacon instead of fried. Serve with scrambled egg and enjoy alongside a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice or a fresh fruit smoothie – our Strawberry & Honey Breakfast Smoothie can act as a breakfast on its own but also offers a nice accompaniment to a Full English.
If you want to get involved in Bike Week, or just fancy getting out and about on two wheels, it’s always a good idea to be prepared with a few basic cycling tips. Here’s our top five:
- Stay safe and get to know the Highway Code for cyclists and plan your route before you head out the door
- Avoid muscle strain and soreness by practicing the proper riding stance; stopping to admire the views is great because it gives you a chance to stretch and adjust
- Cycling through busy areas doesn’t have to be scary! Remember to stay visible to moving traffic (try not to weave) and give parked cars a wide birth
- Health check your bicycle and, if you’re hearing any strange noises, give it a bit of TLC – it’ll reward you by lasting longer and giving you a safer ride
- Carry these 5 essential tools with you for a quick fix while you’re riding: spare inner tube, puncture patch kit, tyre levers, small pump, and a multi-tool gadget.
We’d love to see photos of you taking part in Bike Week or just getting out to enjoy the UK – be sure to share your snaps with us via Jordans Facebook and Twitter!
