John O'Neill in Vietnam

Meet Our 'Man From Jordans'

Wednesday 12 November 2008

Our intrepid traveller John O’Neill has returned in one piece after spending a week in Vietnam looking at cashew nut and coconut growers. John, fondly known within the office as ‘The man from Jordans’ is in charge of making sure our ingredients are top quality. He spends a lot of time working with our British based farmers who grow oats, wheat and barley for us to our ‘nature friendly’, Conservation Grade standards. The rest of John’s time is spent making sure our other ingredients are up to scratch and good enough for Jordans.

Because John is such a stickler for good quality, he prefers to visit the areas where these ingredients come from in person. So last week he was in Vietnam learning all about cashew nuts and coconuts. This might sound like a dream job for many but John hates leaving his family home alone without him and normally prefers the sunny climes of Biggleswade to South East Asia. However it seems Vietnam worked its charms on John and he has returned sounding rather like a tourist rep. “I found everyone I met very friendly and really enjoyed visiting the cashew and coconut farms. In Vietnam families own the coconut trees as well as the land around them where they grow other crops too which means they have a better income. I was really pleased there was a means for these families to earn their own income.” John enthuses.

We use coconut and cashews in products like our new Fruity Fibre muesli, Fruit & Nut Muesli, Nut & Seed Muesli and Tropical Crunchy Oats. So next time you have a bowl of any one of the above you can think of John marching through farms in search of the perfect fruit for you.  To see more about what John got up to in Vietnam click here and here.   Watch our Head of Taste, Kirsten mixing up a tasty bowl of Fruity Fibre, I bet you can’t resist it after watching it made.
