Meet Rob Law
Rob is not from a farming background. His father was a solicitor but Rob had always loved the countryside so after some teenage work experience on a local farm Rob decided to become a farmer. Now he farms 1200 hectares of Hertfordshire’s finest farmland growing oats, wheat and barley which we make into your breakfast. In fact Rob was one of the first farmers to grow oats for us and has helped pioneer our Countryside Commitment; meaning he uses 10% of his farmland to create homes for wildlife.
Thrift farm is now an oasis for wildlife in an area which was intensively farmed during the seventies. “When I first started here the land was sterile.” says Rob who has ploughed endless energy into replanting miles of hedgerows and trees as well as tending areas of wild bird food, wild flowers, grasses and clover to give birds, bees and butterflies a home. His efforts have been rewarded, a trip round Thrift farm rewards you with glimpses of buzzards, skylarks, owls, bumblebees and butterflies a plenty.
Rob says; “I like the fact that my grain doesn’t have to travel far and there is nothing better than opening a packet of cereal for your breakfast and thinking that the grains in your bowl might have been grown by yourself, it makes all the hard work worthwhile.”
