Jordans Moves to 100% Sustainable Palm Oil
Posted by Rachel Marston 12 Feb 2010 12:06pm
The issue of rainforest deforestation for the production of palm oil has long been a concern for us as an ethical food company and we have been researching alternative natural ingredients for many years, without any success to date. Our ultimate intention is to remove palm oil altogether from our products, but in the meantime we are now able to start using a blend of Certified Sustainable Palm Oil and rape seed oil for the first time.
We are able to make the switch to 100% Certified Sustainable Palm Oil thanks to the opening of a new palm oil refinery in the UK that will only use Certified Sustainable Palm Oil. This means that they are able to guarantee that we are using sustainable palm oil in all our products.
The move to CSPO has been a major focus for Jordans due to our ethical beginnings. In 1985, company founder Bill Jordan helped to launch Conservation Grade™, an eco-farming initiative to promote wildlife on British farms in the face of damage from intensive farming methods. Through this 'nature friendly' farming scheme Jordans now contracts 50 British farmers to supply it with the grain it requires for its products, and pays them a premium price for their grain so that 10% of their land can be managed specifically to increase biodiversity and wildlife numbers.
Jordans has been a member of the Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) since 2006, and had previously committed to using Certified Sustainable Palm Oil by 2012. We have also purchased Green Palm certificates as a temporary offset measure against 100% of our palm oil supply, and we will continue to do this until we move to CSPO at the end of the year.
Here's a little taste of what we're about...

Having seen a Friends of the Earth documentary about palm oil production in Indonesia, said to be sustainable but isnt due to the wholesale clearance of rainforest, use of herbicides and fertilisers banned in the West, and the creation of huge palm oil plantations resulting in monocultures, I am naturally concerned that sources are truly sustainable. We in the West need to be more aware of the consequences of our consumption of this product so keep on doing your bit, Jordan's, on behalf of us all!
Dear Jordans, Our kids are really concerned about orangutans and we had been trying to not buy products containing palm oil. We're really pleased with your commitments. Well done - we'll start to buy Jordans again. Simon, Christine, Sam & Kate.
This is great news about SPO it has been the one resaon we have not purchased your products since finding out you used palm oil in your cereals. we had news of what the company was doing some years back through adopting an orangutan and have made our own ban on having them in the house. The reason I came on the site was to comment on Bill Odie's advert for your product, the fact he works with RSPB so clearly has respect for wildlife and is promoting your product which has such a dramatic result for animals, climate and habitat. It is a shame you are not openly promoting this to the general public.
This fills me with hope - if you can do it so can others! We MUST do something about deforestation and protect the vulnerable species there... it is our moral duty. Thank you for caring x
Thank you for your continued efforts in making your food both declicious and ethical. Palm Oil is hard to avoid in food products so this is a step in the right direction. Susan x
