FAQs

1Do any of your products contain salt?

Jordans breakfast cereals & cereal bars sold in the UK do not contain any added salt.

2Where can I buy Jordans products?

Most of the major retailers (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Co-Op, Waitrose, Morrisons, Somerfield, Budgens) order our products, but as we deliver into their central warehouses, unfortunately we have no way of knowing which individual stores in your local area stock our products.

3Can I order directly from you?

No sorry, we don't have the infrastructure here to be able to offer this service, but (see q.1 above)

4What do I do if I am not completely satisfied with any of your products?

In the unlikely event that you are not completely satisfied with any of our products, please use the FREEPOST address (displayed on all our packaging) and return the product to us including your details and letting us know what the issue is.  We will come back to you as soon as possible.

5Where do you source your ingredients from?

Being a cereal manufacturer, it’s not surprising that over 55% of the ingredients that we use in our products are whole grains, and most of these are sourced from nature-friendly British Conservation Grade farms, most of which are based in East Anglia near our Mill. The rest of the ingredients that we use, such as crunchy nuts, juicy berries and tropical fruit are globally sourced to ensure that our standards for best taste and highest quality are met.

6How are your cereals ‘nature-friendly’?

Our Conservation Grade™ farmers commit to taking 10% of their land out of food production to create a number of specific wildlife habitats that are designed to work together to increase the overall biodiversity of the farm. They plant wild flower edges around their fields for bees, insects and butterflies to feed on; sow seed growing crops, to provide foods for birds over winter and put up boxes for owls and bats. Conservation Grade™ farming is recognised by leading environmental organisations such as the RSPB and is endorsed by ‘Green’ campaigners such as Professor David Bellamy.

7Why do some of your cereals contain sugar?

We try to offer choice within our range and for customers conscious of sugar intake in their diet we produce a range of muesli.

8What does the 'May Contain' statement mean?

Ingredients listed under 'May Contain' are not in the product, but are used in other products we make in our factory in Biggleswade.

9Does the intertwined arrows symbol mean the packaging is recyclable?

The intertwined black and white arrows symbol is not a recyclable symbol but a generic mark common in Europe that means that the manufacturer of that product complies with the legislation of the European Packaging Waste system directive. The European Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (94/62/EC) dictates that if you are a manufacturer that sells in Europe, and your product includes any kind of packaging, you are required to recover that packaging. This can be done by creating a system to recover your own packaging from the purchaser of your products (rarely done), or by paying a license fee to join a non-profit program, such as a Green Dot scheme, that releases you from the obligation of recovering your own packaging waste placed on the European market. The Green Dot packaging program is the standard take-back program in more than two dozen European countries to date.

10Is your packaging recyclable?

We do everything we can to minimise the impact of our packaging on the environment while recognising that the main function of all food packaging is to keep the contents safe for consumption. As a business we recycle over 600 tonnes of cardboard a year. Boxed Cereals The cardboard cartons that we use to package our breakfast cereals and cereal bars are manufactured from mixed sources certified by the Forest Stewardsip Council, we use virgin board from sustainable sources wherever possible. These cartons are fully recyclable and many councils will collect them for recycling – contact your local council for details. Please look for the recycle symbol on our boxed cereals packaging. Bags & Bar Wrappers Unfortunately, it is not currently viable for us to use biodegradable film in the production of the bags and wrappers that we use to package the remainder of our range. Regrettably, these materials are not widely recyclable in the UK at the moment, but most large retail stores will have a plastic film recycling bin which you’ll be able to use. We are looking into other alternatives as a priority to try to use the minimum amount of these materials possible, without compromising the safety of your food. We also ensure we recycle all card, paper and plastic used in the process of making our cereal products. Transit or Outer Packaging Cases We ensure the corrugated cardboard used to transport our cereals contain between 90-99% recycled material. These cases are fully recyclable and the supermarkets have arrangements to manage this.

12Why do you use Palm Oil in your products?

In some of our baked cereals and cereal bar products we use a small quantity of rape seed oil and palm oil that has been blended together. We use the absolute minimum amount of palm oil needed to ensure our products stay fresh for the longest possible period of time. As a natural food company with over 30 years experience, we have developed an optimal combination of natural ingredients to ensure our products stay fresh, without having to rely on artificial preservatives. We are now able to use 100% Certified Sustainable Palm Oil thanks to the opening of a new palm oil ‘refinery’ in the UK that will only use Certified Sustainable Palm Oil from Papua New Guinea. This means that we are able to guarantee that we will only use sustainable palm oil in all our cereals and cereal bars from the end of June 2010. Jordans has been a member of the Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) since 2006 – which aims to bring together businesses and environmentalists to promote sustainable palm oil production methods. We also purchased Green Palm certificates for 100% of our palm oil supply to ensure that Certified Sustainable Palm Oil was being produced and used instead of non-sustainable oil palm – even though at that stage we could not guarantee it was in our products. As a business that is also committed to supporting wildlife, we share the very real concerns of many environmentalists regarding the ecological consequences of rainforest deforestation for palm oil production. This is a complex issue involving not only the loss of habitat for the Orang-utan and Sumatran tiger, but also the needs of indigenous rural populations and smallholders who, to a large extent, are supported by the palm oil industry.

November 2011: In the recent WWF Palm Oil Buyers Scorecard 2011 which assesses the buying practices of major companies Jordans & Ryvita Company scored a maximum of 9 points.  The Palm Oil Buyers’ Scorecard 2011 measured the performance of 132 major retailers and consumer goods manufacturers against four areas which show whether or not these companies are acting responsibly:

• Being an active member of the RSPO;

• Making a public commitment to RSPO-certified sustainable palm oil;

• Disclosing how much palm oil they use;

• Showing how much of the palm oil they source is RSPO-certified.
